What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a brain training technique that provides real-time feedback based on brainwave activity. It is especially helpful for those managing challenges like anxiety, depression, ADHD, anger, impulse control, or sleep issues. While neurofeedback often delivers faster results compared to traditional therapy, it works best when combined with regular therapeutic processing. By targeting specific areas of the brain linked to emotional and behavioral instabilities, neurofeedback helps individuals achieve noticeable improvements more quickly, enhancing progress and complementing traditional therapy approaches.

How does Neurofeedback work?

Neurofeedback uses computer animations to provide real-time feedback to the brain based on its activity. A therapist adjusts the training frequency to help your brain achieve its optimal state. For example, if you're watching a movie during a session, a dysregulated brainwave pattern may cause the screen to shrink or flicker, with distorted audio. As your brain begins to regulate and match the optimal frequency, the screen and audio normalize, teaching your brain how to maintain a healthier, more balanced frequency.

What does a Neurofeedback session look like?

Each neurofeedback session is approximately 50 minutes long including set up and clean up. As you walk into the office, you will sit in a chair where a therapist will go through a full symptom check-in prior to beginning the session. The symptom check-in will help you and the therapist know how your symptoms are progressing with the aid of neurofeedback.

To simplify the explanation of what a neurofeedback session looks like, we’ve broken up into 4 parts:

Full symptom check-in

Prior to beginning the session, your therapist will go through a full symptom check-in as a follow-up from the intake or subsequent sessions. This symptom check-in will help you and your therapist know how your symptoms are progressing with the aid of neurofeedback. This is a great time for questions regarding what you’ve been experiencing.

Get set up with the electrodes

After the symptom check-in is complete, your therapist will apply the electrodes to the designated spots on your head using a wax-type paste and a cleansing gel solution. The electrodes, paste, and gel are only applied to the small area where the electrodes will be placed. Depending on your treatment plan, the electrodes may be moved to different positions throughout the session.

Participate in your session

At Canyon Breeze Counseling, we offer feedback options of watching a movie, YouTube, or playing a video game. Prior to beginning the neurofeedback program, you and your therapist will determine what type of feedback you’d like to use. Our most popular options are watching a movie or YouTube videos.

Clean up

After your neurofeedback session is complete, your therapist will end the session, carefully remove the electrodes, and clean the specific spots where the electrodes were previously applied.

What results can I expect?

Neurofeedback is not a one-size-fits-all solution and may not work for everyone. It requires time, consistency, and commitment but has shown numerous positive results for reducing symptoms. The goal is to help individuals track and improve their progress through detailed reports during training sessions, aiming for greater emotional and mental balance.

How long do I need Neurofeedback for?

Consistency is key to success with neurofeedback, much like physical therapy helps the body recover over time. While not a lifelong commitment, regular sessions allow the brain to learn healthier regulation. Stopping too soon risks losing progress, but completing at least 20 sessions provides lasting benefits. As training progresses, sessions taper off to reinforce results, and occasional maintenance sessions can help sustain these improvements. With dedication, neurofeedback can create meaningful, long-term changes for a healthier, more balanced mind!
